FF UNAIR Student Wins 1st Place in Scientific Essay at 11th Hypothalamus Competition 2026

A student from FF UNAIR has achieved a remarkable accomplishment at the national level. Delsyad Muhammad Koosha Alzer, a student in the Bachelor of Pharmacy Program class of 2025, successfully won 1st place in Scientific Essay at The 11th Hypothalamus Competition serves as a platform for health science students from various universities across Indonesia to compete through innovative scientific works.

In this competition, Delsyad collaborated with Bayu Cahyo Bintoro, a student from the Faculty of Dentistry at UNAIR. The cross-disciplinary synergy they built successfully produced a quality scientific essay that surpassed participants from various universities across Indonesia.

The essay that led Delsyad and his team to win first place addressed the theme of innovative technology to support early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), or primary liver cancer, one type of cancer with still-high mortality rates worldwide. In their work, they proposed the integration of various cutting-edge technologies, ranging from the utilization of HCC-specific biomarkers, electrochemical biosensors to detect disease markers quickly and sensitively, microfluidic systems that allow analysis of samples with small volumes, to the application of artificial intelligence to assist in data interpretation and patient risk identification.

Through this approach, the team hoped that HCC screening processes could be conducted more accurately, efficiently, and accessibly, including at primary healthcare facilities. The innovation offered also has the potential to accelerate identification of high-risk patients so that diagnosis and treatment can be initiated earlier. Thus, the chances of successful therapy and improvement in patients’ quality of life are expected to increase significantly.

The innovative idea that combined aspects of pharmacy, health technology, and artificial intelligence became one of the factors that led Delsyad Muhammad Koosha Alzer and Bayu Cahyo Bintoro to win 1st place in Scientific Essay at the 11th Hypothalamus Competition 2026. The multidisciplinary approach they offered was assessed as capable of providing solutions relevant to the challenges of early detection of liver cancer in the future.

Behind this achievement, there was an important role played by apt. Diajeng Putri Paramita, S.Farm., M.Si., who provided guidance as a faculty advisor. Through direction, feedback, and intensive guidance during the process of preparing and presenting the work, Alzer and his team were able to refine their research ideas and successfully achieve the best status in the Scientific Essay Category.

This success is hoped to motivate FF UNAIR students to continue developing their academic potential, actively participating in scientific competitions, and expanding collaboration with various disciplines. The achievement attained by Alzer not only brings honor to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Universitas Airlangga but also serves as concrete evidence of the commitment of the academic community in promoting the emergence of superior generations capable of contributing through innovation and research in the health field.

This achievement aligns with efforts to achieve SDGs, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being through the development of innovations that support early detection of liver cancer so as to improve healthcare service quality and patient safety. Furthermore, the idea that integrates biomarkers, electrochemical biosensors, microfluidic systems, and artificial intelligence also supports SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, as it promotes the development of research-based and innovation-driven health technology with potential application in healthcare service systems in the future. Thus, this scientific work not only demonstrates the academic excellence of UNAIR students but also contributes to health development and advancement of sustainable technology.
