The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR), in collaboration with Wiralab, held an activity titled "Heavy Metal Testing Using the ICP-MS iCAP MSX Equipment" on January 27–29, 2026. The activity took place at the MPL Laboratory, Nanizar Zaman Joenoes Building, and was attended by participants from academics, practitioners, and laboratory staff.
The activity featured two competent speakers: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. apt. Mochamad Yuwono, M.S., Professor at FF UNAIR, and Mr. M. Hendy Fathur R., S.Si. from Wiralab. This training aimed to improve participants' understanding and skills in heavy metal testing using the Inductively Coupled Plasma–Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument, which boasts high sensitivity and accuracy.
On the first day, the activity began with an introduction to the ICP-MS Unit, covering its working principles, main components, and applications in heavy metal analysis. This session provided an important foundation of understanding before participants began hands-on instrument use.
On the second day, participants received more in-depth technical training, including the use of Microwave Digestion and the Water Purification System, instrument tuning, calibration curve creation, dilution or autodilution, and sample injection. Participants enthusiastically participated in the laboratory practicals, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of each analysis stage.
Meanwhile, on the third day, activities focused on data reporting, troubleshooting, and ICP-MS instrument maintenance. This material is considered crucial for ensuring valid analysis results and maintaining optimal instrument performance over the long term.
This collaboration between Faculty of Engineering and Science (FFS) UNAIR and Wiralab is expected to improve the competence of human resources in the field of heavy metal analysis, while also supporting the strengthening of laboratory facilities and testing services within the Faculty of Engineering and Science (FFS) UNAIR.
