Faculty of Pharmacy (FF UNAIR) Optimizes the Quality and Safety of Processed Food in Banyuwangi

A team of lecturers from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Airlangga University (FF UNAIR) conducted a community service program titled "Optimizing the Quality and Safety of Processed Food through Education on Food Additives in Plengsengan, Banyuwangi." This activity took place on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, and was chaired by apt. Muhammad Faris Adrianto, S.Farm., M.Farm., Ph.D.

In this program, participating MSMEs in Banyuwangi were provided with in-depth material on Food Additives (BTP). They were educated about the function of BTP, the rules for their use, and the dangers of prohibited substances such as borax, formaldehyde, and textile dyes, which can trigger side effects on health.

In addition to theory, participants were also invited to participate in simple practical exercises to detect hazardous BTPs. The community service team prepared special, easy-to-use testing equipment. This practical exercise allowed MSMEs to test their products themselves and ensure their safety.

In addition to BTP education, the FF UNAIR team also introduced vacuum packaging techniques. Through demonstrations, participants were taught how to properly package products to maintain quality and shelf life. Good packaging not only enhances product value but also helps attract buyers and expand market reach.

In this activity, MSME participants were also given insights into the importance of cleanliness and sanitation throughout the production process. From a clean work environment and personal hygiene to equipment cleanliness, everything was explained with examples relevant to the daily activities of MSMEs.

This activity was the result of close collaboration between the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Fisheries, University of Airlangga (FFUNAIR) Community Service Team, the Banyuwangi Fisheries Service, and the Denpasar BPSPL Work Unit, Banyuwangi. This synergy demonstrates that efforts to improve food quality and safety require collaboration between various parties, including government, academics, and the community.

This activity demonstrates FFUNAIR's full support for achieving SDGs 3 "Good Health and Well-being."
