FF UNAIR Educates on Food Additive Safety for Fish Processors in Muncar

FF UNAIR conducted community service in Muncar, Banyuwangi, on October 10, 2026. The activity carried the theme “Creating a Healthy Generation Through Education and Counseling on Food Additives for Members of Brak Bina Usaha Cooperative, Muncar, Banyuwangi.”

The service team was led by Prof. Dr. apt. Djoko Agus Purwanto, M.Si. The activity was conducted together with the Banyuwangi Fisheries Agency and Brak Bina Usaha Cooperative Muncar to increase cooperative members’ understanding of fish product safety.

Participants received counseling on food additives (BTP) that are permitted and harmful substances that should not be used in food products. This material helped participants be more careful in selecting ingredients and understanding their proper use.

Food additive safety depends on the type of ingredient, suitability with the product, and the quantity used. Therefore, fish processors need to understand these regulations to produce safe food products.

Beyond counseling, participants underwent training in using test kits or simple testing devices. This training introduced ways to check for the presence of harmful substances in food products and read results according to device instructions.

The activity also included education on healthy consumption patterns and discussion. Participants’ understanding was evaluated through pre-test and post-test assessments before and after the counseling session.

The team also provided free health checks, including blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, and uric acid measurements. This service gave participants the opportunity to understand their health status through initial screening.

The activity supported SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being as well as the AIRCARE program (Airlangga Integrated Community Health, Access, Response, and Equity). Implementation encompassed health promotion, disease prevention, early detection, utilization of health technology, and strengthening access to health services.

This community service was funded by Universitas Airlangga through the Community Partnership Program for Assisted Villages scheme number 3700/B/DST/UN3.FF/PM.01.01/2026. Through education and training, cooperative members are expected to apply the knowledge acquired to improve the safety of fish products and support community health.
