An increasingly international atmosphere continues to take shape at the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR). On Thursday (21/5/2026), FF UNAIR held another guest lecture, this time welcoming Dr. Felix Chan from the University of Birmingham, UK as the keynote speaker. The session was attended by students ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level.
The presence of an academic from one of the world's leading universities opened fresh perspectives for students on global research opportunities, postgraduate study, and international collaboration in the fields of health and pharmacy.
As a university that ranks among the top 100 in the world, the University of Birmingham maintains a research network with more than 6,000 institutions globally. Dr. Felix introduced three flagship schools under the College of Medicine and Health. He also shared his current research focus, which delves deeply into epilepsy, particularly in relation to Tuberous Sclerosis Complex.
Beyond that, Dr. Felix introduced his research laboratory, Chan Lab, and invited students to start identifying their research interests early, especially those considering pursuing a PhD or doctoral degree. He also encouraged students to prepare thoroughly when applying for scholarships such as LPDP, particularly when it comes to putting together a strong research proposal.
On a promising note, Dr. Felix opened the door for Indonesian students interested in continuing their studies at the University of Birmingham and joining his research project at Chan Lab. "I'm really looking forward to having you join our project. You can contact me for a consultation via email or LinkedIn. I'm very approachable," he said, offering encouragement to the room.
The guest lecture wrapped up with an interactive discussion session. Student enthusiasm was evident from the many questions raised, covering everything from tips on writing essays and proposals to a general picture of academic life in Birmingham.
