Prof. Dewi Melani Hariyadi, S.Si., M.Phil., Ph.D., Apt., Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR), served as the keynote speaker at a National Seminar titled "Safe, Legal, and Halal Cosmetics: Strategies to Strengthen Consumer Confidence through Cosmetic Notification and Halal Certification," organized by LPPOM MUI East Java in collaboration with BBPOM at the Oakwood Hotel & Residence Surabaya on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
This step was taken in response to current beauty trends and challenges. Skincare and makeup products are no longer mere supplements but have transformed into primary needs. However, beneath the glitter of this trend, the shadows of illegal, unlicensed products and ambiguous halal status remain a major challenge.
In her keynote address, Prof. Dewi Melani Hariyadi emphasized that the development of Indonesia's cosmetics industry must be balanced with improved business operators' literacy regarding applicable regulations and Halal standards. She conveyed that consumer trust is the primary asset for the cosmetics industry. Therefore, compliance with safety, legality, and halal aspects must be a shared commitment of all stakeholders.
Furthermore, she explained that business operators' literacy regarding regulations is the key factor enabling local products to compete fairly and possess strong appeal in both domestic and global markets.
The presence of FF UNAIR in this forum affirms the active role of academia in overseeing product standardization in society. This participation is a concrete manifestation of support for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through ensuring product safety for public health, as well as SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) through educating product standardization and regulatory compliance for consumer products
