The Faculty of Pharmacy at Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR) held an international guest lecture on Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The session featured Prof. Petya Trendafilova from the Medical University of Sofia, Bulgaria, who spoke on the topic, “Patient Safety in Healthcare Systems: Risks, Reporting, and Prevention Strategies.” The lecture was attended by students from the International Undergraduate Programme (IUP), as well as Master’s and Doctoral programs.
The event was officially opened by FF UNAIR Vice Dean III, Apt. Elida Zairina, S.Si., MPH., PhD., FISQua., who introduced Prof. Petya Trendafilova’s professional profile to the participants. The Medical University of Sofia is a leading health institution in Bulgaria, encompassing four faculties (Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, and Public Health) as well as a Medical College.
In her presentation, Prof. Petya emphasized that patient safety is a multidisciplinary responsibility requiring close collaboration between doctors, pharmacists, nurses, hospital management, and the patients themselves. Within this scope, medication safety stands as one of the most critical dimensions.
Furthermore, Prof. Petya explained that reporting Drug-Related Problems (DRPs) is a key element for the pharmacy profession to prevent fatal risks to patients. She also outlined various cross-regional challenges, including cultural differences that can impact patient safety. Through this lecture, students were encouraged to map out potential risks to patient safety and formulate preventive measures to mitigate DRPs.
The presentation was followed by an engaging discussion session, which sparked high enthusiasm among the students. Through such guest lectures, FF UNAIR remains committed to broadening its students' academic knowledge and equipping future healthcare professionals with global clinical practice standards.
