In collaboration with PUI-PT SCT and ITERA, FF UNAIR encourages the use of Tanggamus coffee waste to produce high-value cosmetic

The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR), in collaboration with the PUI-PT Skin Health and Cosmetic Technology Program, the ITERA Cosmetic Engineering Study Program, the Tanjung Karang Health Polytechnic of Pharmacy, and the Wira Karya Hutan Sejahtera I Farmers Group, successfully held a Community Service Program in Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, on October 11, 2025.

The community service team was warmly welcomed by the residents of Tanggamus Regency. The Head of the Working Group (Pokja), Mr. Sujarwo, and the Head of the Forest Management Unit (KPH), Dr. Budi, were also present, welcoming them with open arms. The activity, titled "Empowering the Community of Tanggamus Regency, Lampung, to Explore the Potential of Coffee and Its Byproducts as Cosmetic Products," was chaired by Prof. Dr. apt. Djoko Agus Purwanto, M.Si.

Coffee waste, such as coffee bean husks, is often considered worthless and is simply thrown away. This activity provided new insights into the potential of this waste as an active ingredient in natural cosmetics. The bioactive compounds contained in coffee can be utilized to make coffee scrubs and clay masks, which are effective in skin care.

The presentations were conducted in parallel. The male participants received a presentation titled "Coffee Storage Techniques to Maintain Quality," which discussed the importance of the storage process to maintain optimal coffee's active ingredients. Meanwhile, the female participants received a presentation from Prof. Dr. apt. Noorma Rosita, M.Si. on "The Benefits of Coffee Beans and Coffee Bean Peel for Cosmetics," which explored the potential of coffee and its waste as ingredients in natural skin care products.

Participants not only had the opportunity to learn theory, but also participated in hands-on cosmetic preparation practice, providing a platform for applying their knowledge and strengthening the community's skills in developing innovative local products.

Prof. Djoko and his team expressed their hope that this activity would be the first step in continuing community support towards developing cosmetic products that are marketable and meet BPOM standards. Furthermore, the current Head of BPOM Lampung is an alumnus of Airlangga University, which is expected to further strengthen the synergy of development and accelerate product legalization in the future.

This activity is a concrete manifestation of Faculty of Pharmacy UNAIR's commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 through knowledge transfer and community capacity building, and SDG 9 through the development of innovative cosmetic products based on local potential that supports the growth of creative and sustainable industries.
