Kampo As a Traditional Japanese Medicine

 

On 17 March 2021, Guest Lecture on Phytopharmacy entitled Introduction and History of Japanese Traditional Medicine Development was held and attended by 110 students from various universities in Indonesia and abroad through Zoom Meeting media. The lecturer in this guest lecture was Professor Kenji Watanabe, MD, PhD, FACP from Yokohama University of Pharmacy, Japan.

This guest lecture was also attended by several lecturers of the Phytopharmacy Subject, such as Rr. Retno Widyowati, S.Si., M.Pharm., PhD., Apt.Dr. Aty Widyawaruyanti, M.Sc., Apt.Prof. Dr. Mangestuti Agil, MS, Apt., and Rice Disi Oktarina, S.Farm., M.Farm., Apt. as well as lecturers from the University of Pharmacy Japan, namely Professor Kaoru Umehara and Professor Jiro Kanto.

The lecture began with an introductory material on Kampo medicine, which is a traditional Japanese medicine. This first material contained the introduction, history, drug facts, uniqueness, and data regarding the application of Kampo medicine that has been done. Furthermore, the second material was about how to maintain the quality of herbs from Kampo. In this material, it was explained about the kampo selling and herbal storage in traditional and modern ways.

In the third material, the mechanism of how Kampo works was explained. In this session some predictive tests, data on the use of kampo for several diseases, and how several types of kampo work were presented. The last material presented was about the global development of Kampo medicine. Prof. Kenji Watanabe explained about traditional medicine from around the world, the development of traditional medicine in the world, the integrative difference from modern and traditional medicine, and the integrative benefits for better treatment.

At the end, the guest lecture was closed with a question and answer session from lecturers and students. Students enthusiastically asked about the application of Kampo treatment to the effects felt by the community after treatment. Prof. Kenji Watanabe explained that this treatment is only given under the supervision of a special doctor who has studied traditional medicine so that people and patients can get legal and efficacious treatment.
