On Tuesday, June 17, 2025, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR) in collaboration with PT. Era Mitra Perdana as the principal of Micromeritics, a true density determination instrument, held a workshop. This activity is entitled "True Density Analysis Using Gas Pycnometer and Its Applications".
True Density itself is one of the parameters in the characterization of materials, especially solid materials and in the pharmaceutical field. In addition, this parameter can also function to predict the results of the tableting process on a small scale or in the manufacturing process.
The purpose of this workshop is to provide new knowledge to students, researchers, academics, and also pharmaceutical industry practitioners regarding developments in the characterization of active ingredients and pharmaceutical materials, especially the determination of tablet porosity and true density.
Taking place at the Nanizar Zaman Joenoes Building, the participants were first given an explanation in the form of a true density theory class from Micromeritics and the application of using true density in tablet formulation by Dr.rer.nat.apt. Maria Lucia Ardhani Dwi Lestari. Then, the session continued with hands-on/practice in the laboratory for determining the true density of various tablet excipient samples, compressing excipients into tablets and calculating the porosity and solid fraction of the formed tablets with one of the parameters being the results of determining the true density.
This workshop was successfully carried out and attended by 15 participants consisting of UNAIR postgraduate students, academics from Widya Mandala Catholic University Surabaya (UKWMS) and Muhammadiyah University of Surabaya (UMS), as well as participants from the pharmaceutical industry.
The activity that was carried out thanks to the collaboration between FF UNAIR and PT. Era Mitra Perdana is a manifestation of SDGs 17 "Partnership for the Goals". With the implementation of the workshop, FF UNAIR can provide knowledge and technology transfer to participants for the advancement of science in the field of pharmacy.
