The 3rd International Summer School, Association of Indonesian Pharmacy Higher Education (AIPHE) Year of 2022 has entered its third day (20/08/2022). Carrying the theme “The Soul of Jamu and Bromo Cultural Remedies”, international students held a workshop on wayang and batik.
The workshop was opened with the presentation of material by Mr. Edi Dwi Riyanto about wayang. Wayang itself is an Indonesian cultural heritage that is very well known in foreign countries. Its development is so rapid on the island of Java.
"The puppet is exemplified from the UNAIR symbol, where the garuda on the UNAIR symbol carries a jar containing tirta amerta, which is believed to be the water of life," he said.
Puppets function as entertainment media for the community and educational facilities because they provide messages in the story. There are several kinds of wayang, namely Shadow Puppet, Bamboo Puppet, Wooden Puppet, Orang Puppet, Motekar Puppet, and Grass Puppet.
UNESCO, the agency in charge of culture from the United Nations, on November 7, 2003 designated wayang as the most famous shadow puppet show from Indonesia, an invaluable World Heritage Masterpiece in the Art of Speech (English: Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity).
After the presentation of the wayang material, international students held a batik workshop which was guided directly by Mr. Rahmad. In this agenda, not only theoretical knowledge is obtained but also experience in making batik itself. For approximately 3 hours, international students can make batik cloth starting from the process of mencanting to drying and later the cloth can be taken home as a souvenir.
