BRATAWALI THAT IS BITTER BUT SWEET

Bratawali is one of the bitter herbs that has a myriad of benefits. Just like noni which is reluctant to be consumed by many people because it has a pungent smell, Bratawali also gets the same treatment because of its bitter taste. Again, Prof. Dr. apt. Mangestuti Agil, MS. re-opening our minds by showing the myriad benefits of Bratawali that we should not hesitate to consume.

Bratawali turned out to be used as an antidiabetic. This has been proven by researchers from Malaysia in 2016. The extract contains compounds that work to help release insulin, a hormone that plays a role in controlling blood sugar levels. Giving 250 mg of dry powder can reduce fasting blood sugar levels. Efficacy was also thought to occur due to an increase in glucose uptake (glucose uptake) by body cells associated with an increase in glucose transporters (proteins that help absorb sugar from the blood).

In addition, it was also found interesting that Bratawali extract was able to increase levels of good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein). The highest increase was owned by methanol, chloroform, and water extracts. So, the efficacy of batawali in lowering cholesterol occurs through increasing levels of good cholesterol. Through this research, it is proven that Bratawali water extract can work to modulate fat levels.

Indian researchers also discussed Bratawali's potential as a Covid-19 drug candidate. According to the results of studies conducted, he was able to ensure that Bratawali can inhibit the virus from entering the human body.
