Free from Diabetes Mellitus with Functional Food

In the framework of implementing Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi (Three Pillars of Higher Education), Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Airlangga held a community service activity on Sunday, 23 July 2017 located on neighborhood hall 03 of Semolowaru sub-district, Sukolilo, Surabaya. This community service brought a theme about the role of functional food as the nonpharmalogical therapy alternative for diabetes mellitus patients.

Started at 6 a.m., this activity was began with morning exercise then continued with urid acid and blood glucose checkups for the training participants. After the health checkup, they were given socialization about functional food and also training on how to process food so that it could be beneficial in maintaining blood glucose level and preventing diabetes mellitus. This community service activity was opened by the Head of Neighborhood 03 of Semolowaru sub-district and continued with the presentation by Prof. Dr. Noor Erma NS,MS, Apt.

Participants' enthusiasm toward this training topic could be seen with many questions asked related with diabetes mellitus, eating pattern, food type, and herbal plant type that could be functioned to prevent diabetes mellitus.

 

Training participants' understanding was evaluated through pretest and posttest. The result of posttest showed that their knowledge was increasing after given the socialization. After that, this activity was ended at 11 a.m. with the distribution of door prizes for participants who asked questions and also souvenirs for training participants who gave the posttest back. According to the questionnaires distributed to the participants, most of them gained different benefits from this training and wished that this kind of activity would be continuously held with different topics.
