ASEAN UNIVERSITY YOUTH SUMMIT (AUYS) 2016
University of Technology Sumbawa (UTS), Nusa Tenggara Barat, Indonesia
AUYS is a conference program for ASEAN students held in anticipation to ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). In the spirit of ASEAN integration, UTS as the host university held AUYS 2016 with the theme “ Social Entrepreneurship as a main character of future ASEAN generation.” This theme was selected to raise the public’s awareness about the incoming ASEAN Economic Community. The summit was held in Sumbawa, Nusa Tenggara Barat on 24-28 January 2016.
On the arrival day, 24 January 2016, delegates were greeted by a welcome party. The welcoming speeches were delivered by several distinguished guests. The first to speak was the head of the AUYS 2016 Muhammad Nurjihadi, M.Sc., a macro- and microeconomics lecturer of UTS. It was followed by a speech from the Sultan of Sumbawa, His Excellency Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV. The speeches concluded with the performance of a traditional Sumbawa dance, introduction of “Istana Dalam Loka”, and Sumbawan traditional cuisine.
In the second day, delegates attended flag ceremony in Aula Bupati which was opened with the speeches of DR. Arief Budi Witarto, M.Eng (Rector of UTS), Sultan Muhammad Kaharuddin IV (Sultan of Sumbawa), and DR. TGB. KH. M. Zainul Majdi, MA (Governor of West Nusa Tenggara). Delegates also participated in several workshops. The first workshop was titled Developing Industries with Social Enterpreneurship Motivation", which was explained by the Deans of UTS. In this occasion, the speaker delivered several important points regarding social entrepreneurship, which can begin in our immediate surroundings. The next workshop was titled Social Enterpreneurship as a Unifier of ASEAN Community."The speaker explained that young people are important in that they are the agents of the AEC. One of the things that can be done by the youth is to start enterprises.
The workshop was then continued with the main event, which is the Youth Conference. The event was divided into 4 sessions. Each university sends a representative in the Round Table Discussion, while the other members act as participants. The roundtable itself was divided into 4 topics, namely “the economic condition in my hometown”, “challenges to be solved in AEC”, “social entrepreneurship opportunity to solve economic problems in the ASEAN Community”, and “The Youth’s Roles and Ideas to Advance ASEAN through Social Entrepreneurship.”
On the last day, 26 January 2016, delegates participated in a rural engagement program in Desa Penyaring Sumbawa. This activity is intended to make the delegates able to interact with the society, from providing lessons to elementary school students to visiting the home industry of buffalo milk candies. In Desa Penyaring, delegates were welcomed by the rural populace with a horse-riding show. Also, the last day were also marked by a sharing session from UTS. Attending speakers were the Rector of UTS and several representatives of UTS partners.
The event of AUYS 2016 was closed with a gala dinner, accompanied by a brief speech about " Financial Inclusion in Aula Bupati Promoting Social Entrepreneurship during AEC"and performances of several ASEAN countries participating in AUYS 2016.
