CONSUMPTION OF LIME FOR DIET TO SKIN HEALTH

Lime is one of the fruits that has a special closeness in the life of the Indonesian people because it is usually consumed as a form of food or drink. Behind the sour taste, just like tamarind and starfruit, lime also has extraordinary properties. The skin of the fruit and leaves of this plant is also popularly used as a fragrance which has antibacterial properties so it is used in aromatherapy.

Prof. Dr. apt. Mangestuti Agil, MS. Professor of Pharmacy Botany and Pharmacognosy, Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Airlangga (FF UNAIR) explained that lime has a potential source of vitamins, especially vitamin C. In addition, it also contains minerals and bioactive substances.

Lime contains limonene which is an essential oil of citrus plants. The results of the study show that limonene can play a role in controlling neurodegeneration disorders or a decrease in brain nerve cell function which generally occurs with age.

Taiwanese researchers also stated that lime essential oil has been shown to exhibit antioxidant and hypolipidemic activity which is important for the health of blood vessel cells and the heart. Lime can also act as a lowering antihyperlipidemia (excess fat content).

Prof. Mangestuti added, there was a study outlining the protective effect of citrus polymethoxy flavone compounds where it can inhibit carcinogenesis (change of normal cells into cancer cells) through various pathways.
