WATCH OUT! CHILDREN'S GROWTH CAN BE THREATENED BY BPA COMPOUNDS IN PACKED DRINKING WATER

So far, people are accustomed to using drinking water in plastic packaging to meet their drinking needs. But did you know that plastic packaging contains BPA compounds that can be harmful to children?

The Dean of FF UNAIR, Prof. Junaidi Khotib through his research entitled "The Impact of Exposure to Bisphenol A (BPA) on Brain Development and Mental Development Disorders" found surprising facts about the risk of exposure to BPA on children's growth and development.

According to him, the potential detrimental effect of BPA on the differentiation of brain function is very large and complex. This is because the resulting changes can cause organic changes and organism behavior.

Prof. Junaidi said the focus of his research was to evaluate the impact of BPA on impaired nerve cell formation and maturation in the brain based on in vitro, in vivo, and epidemiological data. Then he explained some of the important points generated by the research.

First, exposure to BPA in neuronal and buffer cell cultures results in changes in the activity, proliferation, differentiation, and physiology of neurons and buffers expressing specific proteins.

Second, in vivo exposure to BPA in experimental animals in the prenatal and neonatal phases causes changes in differentiation, maturation, and development of the nervous system in the brain.

Third, exposure to BPA can be closely related to the content of BPA in urine and markers of DNA damage. This can have the opportunity to cause growth and development disorders, especially in Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and mental health disorders in children.

As in several articles in which he was a resource person, Prof. Junaidi also recommends some of his ideas to prevent exposure and adverse effects of BPA.
