Smart and Wise with Drug Advertising on Television and DAGUSIBU

The Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Airlangga, as one of the leading institutions in the field of pharmacy in Indonesia and a center of excellence with morality, has the task of carrying out the tridharma of education. One of them is community service activities, where the knowledge that has been developed in institutions and the latest concepts of knowledge are used for maximum advantages for the community.

In September 2019, the implementation team, which was a combination of the Pharmaceutical and Community Pharmacy Departments, Faculty of Pharmacy UNAIR, as well as several undergraduate and graduate students, carried out a Community Service activity entitled "Smart and Wise with Drug Advertising on Television and DAGUSIBU". This activity highlighted the Self-Behavior and Drug Advertising. Self-medication is an effort to select and use drugs or health products by individuals to treat illnesses or symptoms that they experience. It has also been known before that the existence of electronic media has a great influence on the behavior of public self-medication, especially teenagers in Surabaya. On the other hand, in practice, self-medication can be a source of medication errors due to the limited knowledge of the community about drugs and their use. Moreover, at the young age, children are not allowed to do self-medication because there is still limited knowledge in decision making.

This activity is a collaboration between the Faculty of Pharmacy UNAIR and two partners, namely SD Negeri Keputih-245, which is located in Keputih sub-district and SMP Negeri 19 Surabaya, which is located in Klampis-Ngasem sub-district, Surabaya. With a large number of students, the existence of a strategic location, as well as the socio-economic background of various school residents, this activity is very potential to be carried out in both schools.

At the beginning of the activity, questionnaires were distributed to the participants to find out how far their knowledge of medicine, self-medication, and DAGUSIBU was. The questionnaire was filled out by students with instructions given by the guide/speaker.

Besides that, Dr. Dewi Isadiartuti, Apt. and Dr. Tutiek Purwanti, Apt. also participated as the speakers at SMP 19 (Junior High School) Surabaya. From this activity, it is hoped that can be achieved is students as young generation, both elementary and junior high, can become agents of change in efforts to improve health by increasing awareness of drug use, understanding of important aspects that need to be observed from drug advertisements, and of course knowledge of the role of pharmacists in drug and self-medication services.
