Community Service - "With Pharmacists, High School Students Use Drugs Appropriately & Wisely"

Healthy living needs to be applied by everyone in daily life including high school students. In order to achieve a healthy life, one of the ways is by using the right medicine. In addition, high school students as the next generation of young people are also need to know about majors in a university and one of the professions that might be interesting to them, such as pharmacy. Therefore on Tuesday, 17 September 2019, a community service activity was conducted with 109 students of SMAN 1 Surabaya along with three accompanying teachers participating in the Function Room of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Campus C,  Universitas Airlangga. The activity began with remarks by Dr. Wahyu Utami, MS., Apt. as the Chair of the Community Pharmacy Department and Mrs. Siti Hindu from SMAN 1.


Students received material about the correct use of drugs (Dagusibu = Get, Use, Save, Dispose of drugs properly) as well as material about Universitas Airlangga  and Pharmacist Education and Professionals delivered by Andi Hermansyah, S.Farm., M.Sc., Ph.D. Apt., Elida Zairina, S.Si, MPH. Ph.D., Apt., And Dr. Yunita Nita, S.Sc., M.Pharm., Apt. Provision of this material was also equipped with question and answer sessions and demonstrations involving participants so that they understand the materials easily. At the end of the activity, students also visited laboratories at the Faculty of Pharmacy. Arie Sulistyarini, S.Sc., M.Pharm., Apt., Gesnita Nugraheni, S.Farm., M.Sc., Apt.,, Ana Yuda, S.Sc., M.Farm. Apt, Rice Disi O, S.Farm., M.Farm., Apt., Dr.ML Ardhani DLM Pharm.Sci., Ph.D., Apt., Abhimata Paramanandana, S.Farm., M.Sc., Apt., Catur Dian S., S.Farm., M. Kes., Apt. and 10 students helped guiding and explaining the activities of this visit.

 

Pretest and posttest were conducted to find out the effectiveness of this activity. The posttest score was almost doubled compared to the pretest. This showed a very significant increase in participants' knowledge. In addition, 103 out of 109 participants stated that this activity was very useful for high school students. This showed the importance of community service activities in the form of providing insights to high school students about the proper use of drugs and the fields they would choose after graduating from high school. Students wanted sustainable activity like this since it can benefit them in preparing their future.
